Factors to Consider in Selecting Toothbrush

The Size of the Head

Whether opting for a manual or electric toothbrush, the size of the head is one of the most important factors to consider. When the head is too big in comparison to the size of baby’s mouth, it becomes more difficult to maneuver. For babies, toothbrush with round heads is more comfortable to use as they fit well inside the baby’s mouth.

Generally, there are two different shapes of toothbrush heads namely, the conventional type and the diamond type. The former is more effective in cleaning the surface of the baby teeth while the latter helps reach the back parts of the teeth more easily.

The recommended head length for baby toothbrushes us 15 mm for children between 0 and 2 years of age. From 2 to 6 years of age, the head length of toothbrush should be around 19mm. For children between 6 and 12 years old, a toothbrush with the head length of about 19mm is advised.

The Type of the Bristle

The safest choice for babies is to opt for soft bristled brush as it is more gentle and comfortable on gums or small. As brushing vigorously is not recommended for kids, it is important to choose the bristles that are both gentle and at the same time, capable of protecting the enamel of the baby’s teeth.

The Materials Used

It is imperative to select the a toothbrush that is both free from BPA and Phthalates. There is now growing evidence suggesting that Bisphenol-A (BPA) and Phthalates are associated with a number of developmental and hormonal health problems in babies. As a tip, always check whether the toothbrush of your choice has a BPA-Free indication in the packaging.

One key factor to consider in choosing the right brush for your little baby is to consult an expert or a pediatric dentist.
